•Retinopathy of prematurity is a disorder of retinal vascular development.
•After preterm birth, the newborn is exposed to relatively hyperoxic conditions that lead to arrest of normal retinal vascular development.
•In the majority of cases this is transient and vascular development re-continues normally without adverse sequels. In small -but significant- numbers of babies, the normal vascular development is interrupted with abnormal new vessels development.
•These neovessels bleed and fibrovascular proliferation proceed to tractional retinal detachment if no intervention takes place at appropriate times.
